Day 92: Smudging

For those who don’t know about smudging, it is a ceremonial burning of a specific type of plant (either Sage, cedar or sweetgrass) with each plant’s burning having a different purpose.  This is a practice done amongst North American Natives to cleanse negative energy and to promote healing.  The smudge stick smoke is used to cover all areas of a space and intended to be used to cover one’s body as well.  I chose sage for it’s ability to repel bad spirits and feelings.  You can make your own smudge sticks or buy them, which is the route I chose. I’m definitely not an expert but I’ve read a bit about it and I have a co-worker who practices.

I strongly dislike the taste of sage but it smells absolutely amazing. Now that I’ve completed it, my place is covered in a sort of haze so I turned on my bathroom fan and it’s quite beautiful watching the swirling smoke get pulled away. I’m not sure if I’m a believer or not but there is certainly something psychologically appealing about the sense of smell and visual one gets from trying to promote positivity.

Let’s just all take a moment to remember what a fantastic song Wonderwall is.
