February 8, 2015: Turn a craft store bird house from drab to fucking fab.

Craft stores are full of small woody things ready to be pained and decorated. I bought myself the more simplistic looking birdhouse they had which was $8.

I haven’t quite decided how large of a post I’m going to put it on yet, but my next step was to put some very small holes in the bottom for drainage. These birdhouses are not made to be quality pieces of necessarily even used outdoors. If water gets in you don’t want baby birds drowning so the holes are a must. I used a Dremel. Once I know how I’m supporting the house I’ll probably have to add more closer to the edges.

My birdhouse is going to have a copper roof which when outdoors will repel water and get a lovely patina. I glue gunned pennies with a glue gun (because it dries fast enough so that the heavy pennies don’t slide off) I started at the centre on the bottom of the roof.

Although I didn’t count, the whole roof couldn’t have cost more than $1.50.

I had this grand plan of making Popsicle stick siding but I needed a teeny tiny little saw to cut and I didn’t have one. I would think that a Dremel would have such a bit but I didn’t have one. After trying scissors and a box cutter I decided it would have been too time consuming and look too sloppy with imperfect cuts. I chose to stain instead. I still had lots of this classic gray from minwax from a dresser project I did a year or so.

I won’t explain how to stain, I’m sure you know, and if you don’t just read the label. I didn’t sand between coats because well, it’s a birdhouse and they’re not going to be running their little claw feet over the sides and discussing how smooth it is.
I did three coats and painted the little perch copper to match (I used Revlon nail polish in “chameleon”)

I hope some really fucking fabulous birds move in. I’m thinking something like an indigo bunting would match well with the colour scheme. Does that count as racial profiling? I’ll operate on a first come first serve basis, but really an indigo bunting would be nice.

I also made myself a necklace today by painting a shell I found in Aruba and stinging it on some brown silk. I didn’t want it to be really long so I used jump rings and a clasp on the ends.

I think my next DIY needs to be making a light box so I can eliminate shadows when I take pictures of small things.

Wow, I do so much shit now that I’m off my anti-depressants. It’s too soon to say but I think I’ve lost 8 years of my life to pills that made me feel worse instead of better.
